About cows that are bred for their leather

We frequently encounter the misconception that animals are bred and slaughtered specifically for leather production. This perception is inaccurate, and we question the source of such misinformation. In reality, farmers receive no compensation for the hides of their animals, even when raising them according to the highest welfare standards.

Globally, 50% of all animal hides are discarded along with other slaughterhouse by-products. This represents a significant waste. Concurrently, the demand for synthetic leather is increasing. However, even so-called next-generation materials like apple or cactus 'leather' still require numerous petroleum-based components.

Through our work, we aim not only to enable responsible artisans, designers, and businesses to work with regional, sustainable leather, but also to strengthen the regional leather industry. Furthermore, we particularly aim to stimulate critical thinking, educate about the interconnections between agriculture, nutrition, and fashion, and facilitate more conscious purchasing decisions.
