Regional = sustainable?

Regional leather = sustainable leather?

Regional is often equated with sustainability – incorrectly. While 'regional' initially suggests short distances, proximity, and responsibility, origin alone does not provide information about environmental impact, social conditions in production, or material quality.

A product can be regionally manufactured and yet still involve toxic chemicals, energy-intensive processes, or global raw materials. In such cases, regionality becomes a sales argument rather than a sustainability criterion.

Sustainability arises from the interplay of all factors within the value chain: species-appropriate animal husbandry, careful use of water and energy, short distances, meticulous selection of raw materials and chemicals, and fair working conditions. Only when all these elements converge does a regional product truly become a responsible one.

Our approach: We focus on bioregional supply chains where origin, animal husbandry, tanning agents, and processing methods are transparent and traceable. In doing so, we think beyond national borders and align ourselves with natural ecosystems and ecological interconnections.

For us, bioregional means that materials, energy, water, and knowledge originate from interconnected, coordinated regions – ecologically sound, logistically well-planned, and transparently organized. This principle shapes every product we create: raw materials are sourced responsibly, processes are designed to conserve resources, and collaboration with all partners is conducted on an equal footing. In this way, we ensure that regionality is not just a label, but a lived responsibility – for people, animals, and the material. Regionality is just the beginning. Responsibility extends along the entire value chain.

We consult, develop, and source leather along bioregional supply chains. Always transparent, always responsible, yet individually tailored to your needs.
